TWINSBURG, Ohio — When the Brownies troop from Bisell Elementary School in Twinsburg Township heard that robbers stole more than $3,000 that was meant for an 8-year-old classmate with cancer, they wanted to do something to help.
The second-graders gave Keyshaun Knox some early Christmas presents Wednesday and brought a comfort basket for his mother, Crystal McGuire.
"We gave her some soothing soaps, blankets, shampoos, things women like to calm them down," said Brownie troop leader Cynthia Gessler.
The gifts were a welcome surprise for McGuire.
"I'm really excited and happy," she said in a telephone interview. "This really lifts my spirits. Keyshaun is so happy that he's over there singing songs."
Robbers took the money Sunday night. Two armed men abducted the 24-year-old woman's boyfriend and forced their way into her house on Ray Court, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
"Once inside they demanded money from the girlfriend," according to a news release from the sheriff's office. "The girlfriend handed over money she had collected from a fundraiser for her son, a cancer victim, and the men fled."
She told police the money was for Christmas and other needs. McGuire said her son has been treated for a form of cancer that has produced a tumor close to his skull. He has completed five weeks of radiation and must go through 54 weeks of chemotherapy. He is in his 10th week.
Anyone who may have information on the robbery is asked to call investigators at 330-643-2131or Crime Stoppers at 330-434-COPS (2677).
